Claude Simard was a devoted artist born in Quebec in 1943 who contributed immensely to the artistic patrimony of Canada and was part of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He graduated from Ontario College of Art and after an apprenticeship in England, he was hired as the head of the advertisement and visual design of The Simons stores in 1966. The logo that he designed for the company has, since then, been its image. As a graphic designer, Simard was a founding member of the Communikart group and of the Quebec Graphic Designers Society while also teaching Visual Arts at the Universite de Laval. In parallel, he created and designed silkscreen prints, seven postage stamps for Canada Post, major mural commissions for Parks Canada, and an important legacy of paintings and lithographs. His artwork has been displayed in Canadian galleries and museums, as well as in European cities.
