Tall Spread, 1966 by Jack Bush. Collection: The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.
Jack Bush was born in Toronto in 1909 and died there in 1977. Educated at the Royal Canadian Academy in Montreal, and at the Ontario College of Art, he studied at night and worked as a commercial artist during the day. In 1952 he made the first of a series of trips to New York to study the originals of paintings that he had only seen reproduced in magazines. These trips, together with his association with Clement Greenberg whom he met in 1957 when Greenberg was invited to Toronto by the Group of Eleven, of which Jack Bush was a member-were very influential. In 1968 he retired from advertising work to concentrate fully on his painting for which he has won international acclaim.
