**René Carcan**
René Carcan is a Belgian painter and engraver born on May 25, 1925 and died in 1993. He co-founded the Cap d'Encre circle. We owe him many engravings.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels and for several years with the painter Leon Devos and the sculptor G. Jacobs. He spent many years in Italy as a UNESCO Fellow in Rome, Florence and Paris, where he perfected his engraving technique at the studio of master Johnny Friedlaender.
Tuscany and Etruria will become one of his main sources of inspiration.
Back in Brussels, it is at the instigation of his friend historian and poet, Philippe Roberts-Jones, that he decides to approach the engraving. He directed his own graphic workshop, which became the René Carcan Museum.
In 1963, he was a founding member of the Cap d'Encre group, in the company of experienced engravers such as Pierre Alechinsky, Gabriel Belgeonne, Francis De Bolle, Lismonde, Marc Laffineur and Gustave Marchoul.
Throughout his career, he has participated in several biennials around the world and received international awards not only for his prints, but also for his sculptures and jewelry designs.
A skilled engraver, he was also very productive, as his two catalogs admit more than 800 prints. A polymorphous artist, always tempted by experimentation, he will also happily devote himself to sculpture where the complicit illustrator of poetic friends like André Sempoux, Jean Orizet and Philippe Roberts-Jones will be made.
At the end of the eighties, the age coming and not having any descendants, he thinks of perpetuating his artistic heritage. Thus was born on January 1, 1990 the René Carcan Foundation Foundation located at his studio. The aim of the non-profit organization will be "the development of the art of engraving".
It is his old master, Johnny Friedländer who inaugurates in person the René Carcan Foundation on October 20, 1989, followed - among others - by the Brazilian Arthur Piza, the Israeli Tuvia Beeri or the Japanese Hasegawa.

**René Carcan**
René Carcan, est un peintre et graveur belge, né le 25 mai 1925 et mort en 1993. Il a cofondé le cercle Cap d'Encre. On lui doit de nombreuses gravures.
Il a étudié dans l'Académie Royale des Beaux-arts à Bruxelles et pendant plusieurs années avec le peintre Leon Devos et le sculpteur G. Jacobs. Il a passé beaucoup d'années en Italie comme boursier de l’UNESCO à Rome, à Florence et à Paris, où il a perfectionné sa technique de gravure à l'atelier du maître Johnny Friedlaender.
Toscane et Etrurie deviendront par la suite une de ses principales sources d’inspiration.
De retour en Bruxelles, c’est à l’instigation de son ami historien et poète, Philippe Roberts-Jones, qu’il décide d’aborder la gravure. Il a dirigé son propre atelier graphique, qui est devenu le Musée René Carcan.
En 1963, il est membre fondateur du groupe Cap d’Encre, en compagnie de graveurs chevronnés comme Pierre Alechinsky, Gabriel Belgeonne, Francis De Bolle, Lismonde, Marc Laffineur et Gustave Marchoul.
Tout au long de sa carrière, il a participé à plusieurs biennales dans le monde entier et a reçu des prix internationaux non seulement pour ses gravures, mais aussi pour ses sculptures et des conceptions de bijoux.
Graveur habile , il fut également très productif puisque ses deux catalogues raisonnés avouent un peu plus de 800 estampes. Artiste polymorphe, toujours tenté par l’expérimentation, il s’adonnera également avec bonheur à la sculpture où se fera l’illustrateur complice d’amis poètes comme André Sempoux, Jean Orizet et Philippe Roberts-Jones.
Fin des années ‘80, l’âge venant et n’ayant pas la moindre descendance, il songe à pérenniser son héritage artistique. Ainsi naît le 1er janvier 1990 l’asbl Fondation René Carcan sise à son atelier. L’asbl aura pour but premier « le développement de l’art de la gravure » .
C’est son vieux maître, Johnny Friedländer qui inaugure en personne la Fondation René Carcan le 20 octobre 1989, suivi – entre autres – par le Brésilien Arthur Piza, l’Israélien Tuvia Beeri ou encore le Japonais Hasegawa.
