"I have thought over the last quarter-century of doing something with the World War I memorial statue. Finally last autumn, on armistice day, I began to have an idea of how I could handle this theme by using a statue as an apparent backdrop for a contemporary shipping trip, with two women bringing groceries to a contemporary car. I think of World War I as the major watershed on modern history-our lives have been shaped by it. So the painting might be said to be about living in the present while being aware of the past; it is also about a woman and men."
